The Faces Behind the Shadows

The idea for Cursed Voices didn’t just appear overnight- it’s been a slow-burning obsession in the Lathrop household for nearly a decade.

We spent years whispering about “one day” starting a podcast where we could finally put our degrees (and our rather large collection of historical rabbit holes) to good use.

After a few life changing events, we finally stopped talking about it- took the leap, and moved into the world of exploring history full-time.

So who are we? We’re Jess & Larry: a husband-and-wife duo living in Spain, fueled by coffee, with five children who think we’re kinda weird, and a 120-pound St. Bernard who is our unofficial (but very friendly) research assistant.

Our Credentials:

Larry Lathrop, M.S.

  • M.S. in Applied Business Analytics (Data Science and Business Applications)
  • M.S. in Organizational Leadership
  • B.S. in Business Administration
  • Narrative + Analytics Architect: Combines data thinking with story structure—mapping timelines, contradictions, and patterns across sources to build episodes that are both cinematic and logically airtight.

Jessica Lathrop, M.A.

  • M.A. in Ancient and Classical History
  • B.A. in Humanities (Emphasis in History, Minor in Art History)
  • Primary-Source Specialist: Known for deep-archive work- tracking claims back to manuscripts, papyri, court records, and period newspapers, then separating what’s documented from what’s been mythologized.

Jessica Lathrop | Lead Historian & Researcher

The Professional Rabbit Hole Diver.

Jess is the one you’ll find buried under a mountain of digital archives and 18th-century medical journals. Her Master’s thesis on the Ancient Roman Empire was called “revolutionary in the field” because she showcased the women who essentially kept the Roman military from collapsing- a fact that many history books conveniently forget to mention.

She has a knack for finding the “forgotten” stories and a pathological need to cite her sources. When she isn’t unearthing historical secrets, she’s likely trying to convince her five children that Marcus Aurelius was “actually really cool, you guys.”

  • Core Role: Lead Historian, Primary Researcher, and Resident Expert on why we shouldn’t trust everything we read in 19th-century newspapers.
  • Historical Fixations: Women in Ancient Rome, the French Revolution, and basically any mystery that involves a suspicious lack of paperwork.

Larry Lathrop | Audio/Video Master & Resident Mystery Expert

The Data-Cruncher with a Spooky Side.

Larry is the technical heart of the show. Don’t let his two Master’s degrees in business fool you- he has spent nearly 20 years as a self-taught scholar of the strange. Long before “true crime” was a podcast category, Larry was the guy staying up until 3:00 AM researching cold cases and historical anomalies that the rest of the world ignored. His passion is in the odd stories- like the man executed in the 1200s for ‘being a werewolf’ or the scientist who documented a ‘zombie attack’ in 1700.

He brings a unique perspective to the team: he uses his background in business analytics to look for patterns in the past that others miss. In addition to bringing every episode to life with cool visuals and immersive video, he’s also the guardian of the narrative flow and the reason the podcast sounds professional and not like it was recorded in a hardware store.

  • Core Role: Executive Producer, Lead Audio & Video Engineer, and Strategic Narrative Architect using data analysis as a powerful debunking tool.
  • Mystery Obsession: Unsolved disappearances, dark anomalies, and a penchant for digging into cases that mention monsters or aliens.

Our Promise: Obsessively & Relentlessly Researched Cases

Our Mission:

  • Digging Deep into the Past: We put a ton of time into every single episode. We don’t just read a quick summary online- we go straight to the original sources. Whether that means translating a 300-year-old diary or reading through old records in other languages, we do the hard work to find the real truth behind the scary stories.
  • Bringing the Receipts: We use real, historical documents to bring our stories to life. We spend hours tracking down actual archive pages, old maps, and photos of real objects. To us, the real thing is always creepier- and way more interesting- than anything made up. For every case we cover, we make sure we have the historic proof to back it up.
  • Honoring the Legacy: We aren’t just here to scare you with a spooky headline. We hunt for the truth because getting the facts right is the best way to respect the people who actually lived through these nightmares. If it’s in our show, it’s because we found proof that something real happened- even if it’s a little different from the local legends.
  • Captivating, Not Complicated: We take our research seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. Our goal is to make deep-dive history accessible to everyone- even if you haven’t thought about a history book since high school.
  • Why Spain? Because the coffee is better, the healthcare is universal, and the history is literally under our feet.
  • Why “Cursed?” Because the most interesting parts of history are often the ones people are too afraid to talk about.
  • Is Penny the St. Bernard helpful? No. But she provides excellent background snoring for our late-night editing sessions.
